Synthesis Activity Guide

AI Essentials for Business

——
Overview

Each participant is required to complete both Part 1 and Part 2 of the Synthesis Activity as part of the learning requirements to earn a Certificate of Completion in AI Essentials for Business. Your responses to this activity will be shared. Please do not disclose any confidential and/or private information about you and/or your organization.

——
Synthesis Activity: Part 1

For the first part of the Synthesis Activity, which appears at the end of Module 2 and on the Assignments tab, we ask that you propose an AI project that captivates your interest, and that you consider significant. This consists of a series of three reflections that ask you to propose a new project using AI, outline reasons for pursuing it, and highlight important considerations for its success. You should plan to spend 30-60 minutes on this activity. This project can be related to your present or past organization, an organization of interest, or none of the above! It can be your own startup or passion project. Additionally, it can be an idea you have previously shared in the course or something entirely new.

We will ask you to describe different aspects of your project in a series of three reflections. As the reflections will be answered and submitted in order individually, the questions are provided to you in advance within the module so that you can better plan your responses.

——
Synthesis Activity: Part 2

For the second part of the Synthesis Activity, which appears at the end of Module 3 and on the Assignments tab, we ask you to go back to your Part 1 responses and turn them into three slides. Think of this activity as preparing a deck to present to relevant stakeholders. Please use the provided template to prepare your slides. You should plan to spend 30-60 minutes on this activity.

Here are a few additional things to consider:

  • Who is your audience?
  • What would be a desirable outcome from your presentation?
  • Are there additional points about strategy or ethics that you would like to include?

Upload Instructions: Participants must convert the file into a PDF and upload it using the Assignments tab on the Course Dashboard. You should be able to convert your file to PDF using "Save As" options in your slide editor or by choosing "Print to PDF" as a printer option.

You can access the Course Dashboard and Assignments tab at any time from the HBS shield on the sidebar. While uploading your PDF, we ask that you provide a brief summary of your project (2-3 sentences). You may want to include the industry and a couple of things about the project itself. This information will make it easier for others taking this course to browse projects.

Academic Honesty Guidelines

Note that all Synthesis Activity submissions must be completed in accordance with our Academic Honesty policies and HBS Online Honor Code. We expect that your submissions will primarily be written in your own words, and that you will cite any outside sources you reference. Citations are expected whenever you include outside information that is not from your personal knowledge, such as a website or Generative AI. Remember that external sources should only be used to support your own thoughts and analysis. Most of your work must be original. Copying and pasting text from the internet or other sources without a proper citation or unauthorized use of Generative AI may result in you being deemed ineligible for your Certificate of Completion. Please review the HBS Citation Guide for assistance with citing your sources.
