Completing the Emotional Social Competency Inventory (ESCI)

Leadership Principles uses the Emotional Social Competency Inventory (ESCI), a proprietary survey from the Korn Ferry Hay Group (Korn Ferry). You will find the instructions for completing the ESCI for Leadership Principles below. As a reminder, you should complete all steps of this process by the day Module 1 opens.

Instructions

Request an account with Korn Ferry via the link in the course platform—please use the same email you used to register with HBS Online.

Once you enter your first and last name and the email you used to register for HBS Online, click “OK” to confirm your registration.

Once you fill out your information you will receive an email from Korn Ferry with a link to begin the 360 assessment surveys. This message may take up to five minutes to appear in your inbox. Check your spam and clutter folders if you do not see it. This email has the subject line “Leadership Principles: 360 Assessment Survey Instructions."

Select the “Click here” hyperlink located at the bottom of the email from Korn Ferry.

Once you've selected the link, complete Korn Ferry’s Acknowledgement of Global Privacy Policy. This allows Korn Ferry to collect your data per their privacy policy.

After you select the checkbox, the “Accept and Continue” button will turn blue and allow you to proceed to the Korn Ferry website.

Log in to the Korn Ferry site.

Complete the brief Demographics Survey. Once you complete the Demographics Survey, it will move from the “View: Current tasks” to “View: Previous tasks.”

Reach out to the individuals you identified in the course platform to be your reviewers and ask them to participate. Below is a sample email that you can use. Please let your raters know that they will need to complete their survey by the Module 1 start date, and be sure to thank them for their willingness to participate.

Sample E-mail:
I am currently participating in Leadership Principles, an online course delivered by Harvard Business School Online. As part of this course, I will complete a 360-degree evaluation called the Emotional and Social Competency Inventory (ESCI) from Korn Ferry that involves seeking feedback from former and current colleagues and managers. The purpose of this 360-degree survey is to help those who take it to develop and improve as a leader, and your insights will help enable me to do that. If you are willing, I will submit your name and email address to Korn Ferry and you will receive an email notification from them with details on completing the survey about me (specifically, about a variety of leadership competencies). The survey will take approximately 20 minutes, and must be completed by [Insert deadline date, the day before the start of Module 1]. I would appreciate your feedback as part of my leadership development. Please let me know if you are willing to participate.

Once you have confirmed your list of raters, log in to the Korn Ferry site and click “Begin” under “Choose raters.”

Enter first names, last names, and email addresses for your raters. To receive a complete and useful assessment report, you will need to have a minimum of two completed rater surveys. We highly recommend that you choose at least six raters. You are, however, welcome to choose more than six raters.

Once you have a complete list, click on “Save and send rater invitations” in the bottom right corner of the screen. Please note that once you click “Save and send rater invitations” your raters will automatically receive an email from Korn Ferry with information on how to complete their assessment.

Once you send the invitations to your raters, you should see a confirmation screen stating, “Raters have been successfully registered.” This means that your raters have received an email inviting them to complete their surveys. You can check the Survey Status tab throughout the pre-work period to monitor how many raters have completed the survey.

After nominating your raters, be sure to complete your self-survey by clicking “Begin” under the “ESCI – University Edition.”

Team Meeting Frequently Asked Questions

How do I log back into my Korn Ferry account?

To access your Korn Ferry account again, click the link that was provided in the original email by Korn Ferry. This email has the subject line “Leadership Principles: 360 Assessment Survey Instructions.”

After I’ve entered my initial raters, can I go back and enter additional rater information?

You can add additional raters at any time before the pre-work period ends by clicking the “Raters” tab on your Korn Ferry dashboard.

Can I see how many raters have completed their survey?

You can check the number of ESCI surveys that have been completed by clicking on the “Survey status” tab of your Korn Ferry dashboard.

Can I check which of my raters has completed their survey?

ESCI Survey results are aggregated and anonymous and there is no way to check which of your raters have completed the survey. We do send periodic email reminders to any raters who have not completed their survey so raters will receive regular reminders.

What can I do if one or more of my raters isn’t receiving the Korn Ferry emails?

Please ensure that your raters have checked their spam, junk, and promotions folders for an email titled “HBS Online Requests Feedback on {Your Name}.” If your raters are still unable to locate the invitation email, we recommend asking them for an alternative email address that you can try. You can then edit their email addresses on the “Raters” tab on the Korn Ferry dashboard, and send them a new invitation.

Can I access the raw data from the ESCI Survey?

The ESCI Survey is designed to be completely anonymous and we are, unfortunately, unable to access the raw data submitted by your raters.

What does it mean when my survey status indicates “Insufficient Data?”

To generate survey results after the survey deadline, at least two raters will need to complete the survey for you. Until two raters have completed the survey, you will see the "Insufficient Data" message. Please rest assured that we will be sending periodic reminder emails to your raters between now and the survey due date.

When and how will I receive my results report?

You will receive your survey results via email by the third day of Module 1.

I couldn’t finish the ESCI Survey before the first module began. What should I do?

The deadline for your raters to complete the ESCI Survey is system-wide and cannot be adjusted on an individual level. Although completing the ESCI Survey is recommended, it is not required for course completion. If at least two raters did not complete the survey for you, generic results will be loaded into the course platform for you to use.
